Question

Have been looking through my book to try and find the equation thatworks with this problem, but not having any luck. I remember it waspretty straight forward, as a problem was done like this in class, but I ended up forgetting my notebook at work. Thanks for thehelp.

A spy satellite circles the Earth at an altitude of 190 km and carries out surveillance with a specialhigh-resolution telescopic camera having a lens diameter of 35 cm.If the angular resolution of this camera is limited by diffraction, estimate the separation of two small objects on the Earth's surfacethat are just resolved in yellow-green light ( =550 nm).
1 cm

Explanation / Answer

Use Rayleighs criterion    1.22 = Dsin         where D is the diameter of the lens 1.22 = D y / L y = 1.22 L / D = 1.22* 550 x 10-9 * 190 x 103 / 0.35 =         = 0.364meter =    36.4cm
