Question
From Applied Concepts, Chapter 6#3. Several tribes engage in a ritual much like bungee jumping, inwhich a tree vine is used instead of a bungee cord.
a) A 78.0kg person falls from a cliff with such a vine attached tohis ankles. Find the force applied to his ankles if ittakes .355 seconds to change his velocity from -18.5 m/s to rest(the negative sign represents downward direction).
b) Find the force applied to his ankles when he takes 1.98secondsto change his velocity from -18.5m/s to + 9.75 m/s using a bungeecord. (a bungee causes person to bounce back upward)
c) Why is it safer to use a bungee cord than a tree vine?
Explanation / Answer
force is equal to change in momentum over change in time F=p/t = (78kg)(0m/s)-(78kg)(-18.5m/s)/.355s = 4064.79N part b) F=p/t = (78)(9.75)-(78)(-18.5)/1.98s =1112.87879N part c) this of course is a very large force to be acting on someone, theyare experiencing an acceleration 117 times that of gravity
