Question
A beam of length L and mass Mrests on two pivots. The firstpivot is at the left end, taken as the origin, and the second pivotis at a distance L from the left end. A woman of mass m starts atthe left end and walks toward the rightend as in figure P8.12. Whenthe beam is on the verge of tipping, find symbolic expressions for(a) the normal force exerted by the second pivot in terms of M, mand g and (b) the woman;s position in terms of M, m,L,and L. C)find the minimum value of L that allow the woman to reach the endof the beam without it tipping.
Explanation / Answer
You use L twice in your description of the problem. Are they equal? My guess is that the second pivot is not placed at the far end ofthe beam. Is one upper-case and one lower-case in your writtenproblem?
