Question
In the question we are asked to state the significance of theinverse of a quantity, 460 ft^2/gal. The inverse of thisquantity is 2.174 x 10^-3 gal/ft^2.
I think that when you multiply the quantity by the inverse theanswer is one. Also, in the first quantity given, we startout with one gallon, whereas in the inverse we have oneft^2. But other than that I’m not sure what thesignificance of the inverse is.
The solution listed states that the inverse, “2.174 x 10^-3 gal point converse 1 ft^2 area,” but I don’tunderstand what that statement means.
Explanation / Answer
the original quantity, 460 ft2/gal, can be writtenas: " 460 square feet per gallon" which means that, per gallon of paint, you can cover 460 squarefeet. the inverse quantity, 2.174 x 10-3 gal/ft2 ,can be written as: "2.174 x 10-3 gallon per square feet" which means that, to paint 1 square foot, you need 2.174 x10-3 gallon of paint. hope this helps!
