A gyroscope is a device for measuring ormaintaining orientation, based on the principles of angularmomentum. The device is a spinning wheel or disk whoseaxle is free to take any orientation. This orientation changes muchless in response to a given external torque than it would withoutthe large angular momentum associated with the gyroscope's highrate of spin. Since external torque is minimized by mounting thedevice in gimbals, its orientation remains nearly fixed, regardlessof any motion of the platform on which it is mounted either onairplane or a ship.
