Question

This is an excerpt from my physics lab book.
"The force of gravity clearly causes both a projectile and atarget to accelerate. However, we still use this situation as anexample of a two-dimensional collision where conservation ofmomentum holds."
Can somebody explain to me why this is the case?
Thanks! ====================== Clarification:: The lab procedures were basically to maintain a stablesurrounding envrioment, then launch a projectile at a target andmeasure the data with the given equipment and to make conclusionsbased on your data.
