Question
A type of antenna consists of a circular loop; when themagnetic field of a radio wave strikes this loop it induces acurrent around it. Suppose that the magnetic field of a radio waveis horizontal. What must be the orientation of the loop for maximumsensitivity? A type of antenna consists of a circular loop; when themagnetic field of a radio wave strikes this loop it induces acurrent around it. Suppose that the magnetic field of a radio waveis horizontal. What must be the orientation of the loop for maximumsensitivity?Explanation / Answer
A changing magnetic field will induce an emf in a conductingloop (Faraday's law of induction). The induced emf is proportionalto the magnetic flux intercepted by the surface spanned by theloop. In order to maximize the induced current, we have to maximizethe induced emf, and therefore maximize the magnetic fluxintercepted by the loop. This can be achieved of the loop islocated perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field.Related Questions
