Question

Conclusion/Synthesis: Resting Membrane Potential, Part I

You are going to record RMP from a cell using an electrode. You place your electrode and record a resting membrane potential every millisecond. You record an initial value of -70mV; however, over time you notice that your recordings become more and more positive until the RMP reaches 0mV. Assuming that Na+ and K+ are the major determinants of RMP in this cell, which of the following could best explain your results?

The cell is becoming depleted of K+. The cell's K+ leak channels have stopped functioning. The cell is becoming depleted of Na+. The cell's Na+ leak channels have stopped functioning. The cell's Na+K+ ATPase pumps have stopped functioning. Na+-K+ pump Na Na+ Na Cell interior Na 70 mV

Explanation / Answer

1. Most of the cell have the resting potential value of approximately -70mV. It is determined by the concentration of ions on both sides of cell membrane.

2. Cells have more K+ ion concentration insde the cell and less concentrated outside the cell.

3. Na+ are more concentrated outside the cell and less concentrated in side the cell.

4. In neuron K+ and Na+ are transported across the membran by K+ and Na+ ion channels.

3. Movement of K+ ions down their concentration gradient creates a charge imbalance across the membrane.

4. In a neuron the resting membrane potential is closer to the K+ ion than Na+ ion.

5. If more K+ channels were to open making it easier to K+ to cross the cell membran.

6. This will creates slite excess positive charge builds up on the outside of the cell and slight excess of negative charge builds up inside the cell.

7. This means the cell become depleted of K+ ions. Because of the this reason RMP of cell is changing from -70mV to 0mV.
