Question
A uniform disk of mass 0.90 kg and radius7.0 cm is mounted in the center of a 10 cmaxle and spun at 700 rev/min. The axle isthen placed in a horizontal position with one end resting on apivot. The other end is given an initial horizontal velocity suchthat the precession is smooth with no nutation.(a) What is the angular velocity ofprecession?

Explanation / Answer
Nooooooooo... . Sorry, but the person in the first post totally misunderstoodthe question. . You are asked in part (a) to find the angular speed ofprecession, which is NOT the same as theangular speed of the rotation of the wheel. . angular speed of precession = mg r / I . where m is mass of the wheel, r is the distance from the pivot to the wheel ( 5 cm) I is the moment of inertia of the wheel (1/2 mR2 ) and is the angular speedof the spinning (700 rpm, which is 73.30rad/sec), . Plug in the proper values and you get the answer for part(a).Related Questions
