Question

A passenger in a train moving at 30 m/s passes a personstanding on a station platform at t=t'=0. Twenty secondsafter the train passes, the person on the platform determines thata bird flying along the tracks in the same direction as the trainis 800m away. Five seconds later, the bird is 850maway. Assume a constant velocity for all involved. a) Draw a coordinate system indicating the motion of bird andtrain in the grame of the observer on the platform b) What are the coordinates of the bird as determined by thepassenger? c) Find the velocity of the bird as determined by the observeron the platform and the train passenger. Explanation / Answer

I tried to include a diagram, but the browser gives me error.sorry. I will try to describe it in words. Frame O: reference frame of the platform. Observer on the platformis S. Frame O': reference frame attached to the train. Passenger on thetrain is S'. O and O' coincide at t=t'=0. O' moves with x-velocity u w.r.t.O. O: coordinates system (x,y,z,t) O': coordinates system (x',y',z',t) >>> note that this isgalilean transformation; so t = t'. The two systems are related by x'=x-ut, y'=y, z'=z at time t=20, bird's coordinate x=800 at time t=25, x = 850 b) according to passenger S', x' (at 20) = 800-30*20= 200m x'(at 25) = 850-30*25= 100 m c) according to observer S, speed of bird = v = (850-800)/5 = 10 m/s according to S', speed = (100-200)/5 = -20 m/s
