Question

The fern is defined as the unit of force requiredto accelerate a unit of mass, called the bung, with the gravitational acceleration on the surface of the moon, which is one-sixth of the normal gravitational acceleration onearth.

(a) What is the conversion factor that would be used to convert aforce from the natural unit to the derived unit in this system?(Give both its numerical and its units.)

(b) What is the weight in ferns of a 3-bung object on the moon? What does the same object weigh in Lizard Lick, North Carolina?

Explanation / Answer

Sorry, but the question is nonsensical... and not because ofthe funny words. . The person who made this question made a mistake. They defined"fern" in terms of "bung" but gave you neither. It's like havingtwo unknowns and only one equation. Like this: .            1 fern   = (1/6)g * 1 bung . How much is a fern? . It can't be answered because you don't know how much a "bung"is. . This question is the equivalent of me asking you "I am 3 yearsolder than my brother. Find my age and my brother's age." . If they told you "a 'bung' is equal to 8 kilograms" orsomething like that, then you could answer the question. . Until then... two unknowns, one equation. Can't do anythingwith it.
