Question

A backpack full of books weighing 52N rests on a table in aclassroom.A spring with a force constant of 150 N/m is attached tothe backpack and pulled horizontally. a) if the spring is pulleduntil it stretches 2 cm and the pack remains at rest what is theforce of friction exerted on the back pack by the table? b)doesyour answer in part (a) change if the mass of the backpack isdouble? explain. (c) if the backpack begins to slide when thespring (k= 150 N/m) stretches by 2.5 com what is the coefficient ofstatic friction between the backpack and the table?

Please explain well so I can fully understand, Thankyou : )

Explanation / Answer

The force acting on the backpack due to spring = -kx Therefore the frictional force f = -kx = 150 N/m * 0.02m = - 3N b) from above we have                  f = 3N = mg                      = 3 / 52                            = 0.057    If mass is doubled ie., N = 104 N                    f' = 0.057 *104 = 6N
