Explanation / Answer

Laptops have processors kept in a closed environment. Processors generate enormous amount of heat and needs to be kept cool for better performance and life. For cooling of processors, the concept of Heat Pipe is used.

Heat Pipe performs heat exchange based on two phenomenons:
1) Heat transfer by conduction
2) Heat absorption due to phase change

Conduction is based on the solid material used in the heat pipe (usually copper).

Heat transfer by phase change uses the principle of latent heat of vaporisation. The junction where the phase change material (such as liquid sodium, liquid ammonia, even water) touches the heat pipe surface, it vaporises and absorbs heat in this process. This vapor travels in the pipe and releases heat elsewhere and becomes liquid again.

Since latent heat of liquids are usually very high (For example : 2,230 joules per gram or 533 calories for Water), these are really good in maintaining cooler temperature in the processor and thus helps the user of the laptop. If we consider other forms of cooling such as water cooling, this will require big water pumps, heat exchangers etc. Thus, the laptops will not be portable and taken in a bag.

Hope this information was useful. To add more points, you can refer to Heat pipes, add some image of heat pipes and discuss about various phase change materials.

Cheers :)
