Question

Freckles are dominant. A nurse hands a freckled baby to a non-freckled couple, is it likely to be theirs? Why or why not? If the parents are both heterozygous Ff then could they have a freckled child??
Colorblindness is X-linked recessive. A man has three normal vision sons and one colorblind daughter. What is this man’s genotype? What is his wife’s genotype? Does the mom have to a carrier for the daughter to be colorblind? And the father has to be colorblind?

Explanation / Answer

A normal non freckled couple cannot have a freckled baby as the genes controlling are dominant and even a single copy of the gene (heterozygous Ff) can produce the character.Since both the parents are non freckled shows that they may have the gene in recessive condition or it may be absent .

If both the parents are heterozygous the chances of them of having a freckled child is more as the dominant gene can be passed on from either of the parent.

color blindness is a sex linked recessive(red green color blindness)character which means in order to express the trait the genes should be homozygous recessivecondition. On the other hand the blue yellow color blindness is an autosomal dominant trait

Since the male offsprings are normal and only the daughter is affected the father is colorblind and the mother a carrier. the genotype of the father would be  XbY and the mother would be XBXb. . the mother is a carrier but normal as she is heterozygous .

Yes the mom needs to be carrier as the daughter needs to get X chromosome one each from her mother and father if she is color blind then the chances of her getting from both the parents is more.

The father also needs to be color blind as he also donates one copy of x chromosome to his daughter.
