Question
An indestructible bullet 2.00 cm long is fired straight ^ through a board that is 10.0 cm thick. The bullet strikes the board with a speed of 420 m/s and emerges with a speed of 280 m/s. (a) What is the average acceleration of the bullet as it passes through the board? (b) What is the total time that the bullet is in contact with the board? (c) What thickness of board (calculated to 0.1 cm) would it take to stop the bullet, assuming the bullet's acceleration through all parts of the board is the same?Explanation / Answer
a) I know you got this but I need to know the acceleration forthe rest of the problem
vf2=vi2+2ad
a=-4 900 000 m/s2
b)Now we use the found acceleration in the equation:
vf=vi+at
280=420+(-4900000)t
t=2.86x10-5 sec.
c) Now we do the part a again except we know the acceleration,vf is 0 and we don't know d.
vf2=vi2+2ad
o=4202+2(-4900000)d
d=.018m=1.8cm
