Question

1- Light reflects off of a water surface as shown in the figure. If the incident angle of the light is 25.9 o, at what angle is the light reflected back into the air?

Note: nair = 1; nwater = 1.33.

2 - Light reflects off of a water surface as shown in the figure. If the incident angle of the light is 33.7o, at what angle, in degrees, is the light transmitted?

Note: nair = 1; nwater = 1.33.

3 - For the air/water interface in Questions 1 and 2, is there an angle for which all light will be reflected from the surface.

Remember: the light is going from the air to the water and nair = 1 and nwater = 1.33.

4 - For the air/water interface in Questions 1 and 2, is there an angle for which the light reflected from the surface will be polarized.

Remember: the light is going from the air to the water and nair = 1 and nwater = 1.33.

Explanation / Answer

1) We know, Angle of refelection = angle of incidence

so, angle of reflection = 25.9 degrees

2) Apply snel's law

sin(theta_i)/sin(theta_r) = n2/n1

sin(theta_r) = sin(theta_i)*n1/n2

= sin(33.7)*1/1.33

= 0.417

theta_r = sin^-1(0.417)

= 24.65 degrees

3) No. Because total internal reflection occures when light travles from denser medium to rarer medium. But not from rarer medium to denser medium.

4) No
