Question 21:

Part A: Suppose you pour water into a container until it reaches a depth of 14 cm . Next, you carefully pour in a 7.2 cm thickness of olive oil so that it floats on top of the water...What is the pressure at the bottom of the container?

Part B: n the hydraulic system shown in the figure(Figure 1) , the piston on the left has a diameter of 4.3 cmand a mass of 1.9 kg . The piston on the right has a diameter of 15 cm and a mass of 3.2 kg .

If the density of the fluid is 800 kg/m3 , what is the height difference h between the two pistons?

Explanation / Answer

(a) density of olive oil = 920 kg /m^2

P = Patm + (rho1 g h1) + (rho2 g h2)

P = (101325) + (920 x 9.8 x 0.072) + (1000x 9.8 x 0.14)

P = 103350 Pa Or 1.02 atm

(b) (Pleft - P right) = (1.9 x9.8 /(pi 0.0215^2)) - (3.2 x 9.8 / pi 0.075^2)

= 11047 Pa

11047 = rho g h = 800 x 9.8 x h

h = 1.4 m
