Given that the inner diameter of the pipe is 3 cma 2mm nd the thickness is (a) Find an estimate for the current induced by the falling magnet, assuming that the speed of the magnet inside of the pipe is constant. (b) What is the magnitude of the magnetic breaking force?

Explanation / Answer

When the magnet falls through a copper pipe, magnetic flux changes, which induces current in pipe. This induced current produces it's own magnetic field, which opposes the passage of magnet through it. This is simply Lenz's law and the induced current is known as eddy current.
