Question

In the circuit shown R.-12(2, R1120 , the capacitance is c-souf, and the enyOf the battery is 10V. The capacitor is initialy uncharged a) Find the current through R at the moment the switch is closed. |1 point b) Find the current through R t the moment the switch is closed. I1 point) c) Find the current through the battery after a long time, when the capacitor is fuly charged. (3 point) d) Whet is the voltage across the capacitor when fully charged? (1 point) e) The switch is now opened. What is the current theaugh R, when the switch is opened? (3 point) what is the charge on the capacitor at the moment the switch opened? 1 point g) At what time is the energy stored in the capacitor 1/3 of its initial value after the switch was opened? 14 peints)

Explanation / Answer

e(a) when switch is closed, capacitor has almost zero resistance, hence, all current passes through Capacitor and no current passes through R2.

Hence, current through R2 = 0 ampere

(b) now, resistance of the cuircuit when switch is just coled is R1 = 12 ohm

Voltage v = 10 Volts

Current through R1 = 10/12 A = 0.833 Ampere

(c) when capacitor os fully charged, no current passes through it and all current flows through the series combination of R1 and R2.

Total resistance = R1 + R2 = 12 + 20 = 32 ohm

Voltage = 10 volts

Current through cuircuit, or battery = 10/32 = 0.3125 ampere

(d) when capacitor is fully charged, voltage across capacitor = voltage across R2

It is give by = current through R2 times resistance

Volatge = 0.3125 x 20 = 6.25 Volts
