Question
Problem 3: An owl is carrying a mouse to the chicks in its nest. The owl is at that time is 4 m west and 10.5 m above the center of the 33 cm diameter nest, and flying east at 3.1 m/s at an angle 26 below the horizontal when it accidentally drops the mouse Part (a) Calculate the horizontal position of the mouse when it has fallen 10.5 m, assuming the nest is at the origin of a coordinate system with east being positive. Numeric A numeric value is expected and not an expression. Part (b) How far firom the east edge of the nest did the mouse fall, in centimeters? Numeric :A mumeric value is expected and not an expression. d=Explanation / Answer
a)the vertical and horizontal velocity components are:
vx = 3.1 cos26 = 2.8 m/s
vy = 3.1 sin26 = -1.4 m/s
from eqn of motion we know that
S = ut + 1/2 at^2
-10.5 = -1.4 t - 4.9 t^2
4.9t^2 + 1.4 t - 10.5 = 0
t = 1.33 s
X = vx t
X = 2.8 x 1.33 = 3.72 m
Hence, X = 3.72 m
b)4 - 3.72 = 0.28 from the origin
r = 33/2 = 16.5 = 0.165 m
d = 0.28+0.165 = 0.445 m
Hence, d = 44.5 cm
