Question

Problem 9.30 Part A A horizontal spring with spring constant 85 N/m extends outward from a wall just above floor level. A7.5 kg box sliding across a frictionless floor hits the end of the spring and compresses it 3.5 cm before the spring expands and shoots the box back out. How fast was the box going when it hit the spring? How fast was the box going when it hit the spring? Express your answer with the appropriate units. ] ? u= 11 Value Units Submit My Answers Give Up Incorrect; Try Again; 5 attempts remaining

Explanation / Answer

from the relation f = kx

f = 85*0.035 = 2.975 N

from the conservation of energy

kinetic energy of the box provides the elestic potential energy along the spring

1/2mv^2 = 1/2kx^2

v = sqrt(k/m)*x

v = 0.035*sqrt(85/7.5)

v = 0.1178 m/s
