Question

Problem 23.32 Part A The figure shows a circuit with an area of 0.060 m2 containing a R = 1.0 and a C = 250 F uncharged capacitor. (Figure 1) Pointing into the plane of the circuit is a uniform magnetic field 0.25 T. In 0.010 s the magnetic field reverses direction at a constant rate to become 0.25 T pointing out of the plane. What maximum charge (sign and magnitude) accumulates on the upper plate of the capacitor in the diagram? Express your answer using two significant figures. Explanation / Answer

Because of the change in B field an emf will be induced in the loop.

We know from Farady's law that:

E = -d(phi)/dt = -d(BA)/dt = A(B1 - B2)/t

E = 0.06 (0.25 - (-0.25))/0.01 = 3 V

charge in the capacitor will be:

Q = CV

Q = 250 x 10^-6 x 3 = 750 x 10^-6 C = 0.750 mC

Hence, Q = 0.75 mC
