Question
2. (Application) Suppose KDVD, the campus radio station, were to transmit from two antennas set lambda/4 apart (see photo). Also, suppose there is a constant phase difference associated with the waves coming from each antenna such that the act maximum from antenna A is emitted a time T/4 earlier than those of antenna B (the words an electrical engineer might use this are "the signal from A is pi/2 ahead of the signal from antenna B).a). For each of the four principal compass points north, south, west, and east, determined whether the signals from the two antenna interfere, constructively, destructively, or partially.
Please use phase charts and diagrams to justify your answers! Thank you ^_^
do. Then, look back over g. Write down anything source source efronts from each source.
Explanation / Answer
given, wavelength lambda emitted by two antennas having phase difference phi
phi = pi/2
i.e signal from A is lambda/4 ahead of signal from B
also, seperation, d = lambda/4
cosider direction North
from symmetry , physical path difference = 0
total path difference = lambda/4
so the signals will interfere partially
this is also the case for South direction from symmetry
for East dirtection
physical path difference = lambda/4
net path difference = lmb4 - lambda/4 = 0
hence the waves will constructively interfere
For west direction
physical path difference = lambda/4
net path difference = lambda/4 + lambda/4 = lambda/2
hence the waves will destructively interfere
