Question

please help me solve the physics question. Please have the writing neatly or typed. thank you so much!!

1.1 Don't try this at home You're curious about how fast your car can accelerate. Starting at rest, you stomp on the gas pedal and after 120 yards (= 1.2 × 102 yards) your speedometer reads 42 mph. What's your acceleration? What assumption do you have to make to calculate it? Show all your work, including units and the coordinate system you pick (location of the origin and direction that is positive). Your final answer should have correct sig figs.

Explanation / Answer

First of all covert the all the units in SI for easiness to solve the problem.

120 yards = 109.7 m

and, 42 mph = 18.8 m/s.

Now, suppose 'a' is your acceleration. Use the expression -

v^2 = u^2 + 2*a*s

given that -

v = 18.8 m/s, u = 0 (since you are starting from rest), a = ?, s = 109.7 m

Now put the values -

18.8^2 = 0 + 2*a*109.7

=> a = 18.8^2 / (2*109.7) = 1.61 m/s^2.
