Question

Determine the direction of the force (if any) that will act on the charge in each of the following situations.

1. a negative charge within an electric field that points downward

2. a positive charge within an electric field that points to the left

3. a negative charge moving to the left in a magnetic field that points out of the screen

4. a positive charge moving out of the screen in a magnetic field that points downward

5. a negative charge moving to the left in an electric field that points out of the screen

6. a negative charge moving to the left in a magnetic field that points to the right

Explanation / Answer

1

The negative charge move opposite to field direction, so, the force on the negative charge is in upward direction.

2

The positive charge move along field direction, so, the force on the positive charge is in leftward direction.

3

According to right hand thumb rule put your thumb in the direction of the velocity and straighten your point finger towards magnetic field, then the curved fingers gives the direction of force.

From the above law, the magnetic field is out of the page, the direction of the moving charge is towards left, and so, the force is towards top if charge is positive.

It is towards bottom if the charge is negative.

4

According to right hand rule, the direction of force is towards right.

5

The negative charge attracts opposite to field direction. That is towards the force is towards into the screen.

6

Since, field and velocity are in anti-parallel, there is no force on the charge.
