Express your answer as an integer and include the appropriate units Far in space, where gravity is negligible, a 425 kg rocket traveling at 65.0 m/s fires its engines. The figure (Figure 1) shows the thrust force as a function of time. Explanation / Answer

a)

Impulse = area under the curve

Impulse = 1/2*10*1000 + 1/2*20*1000 =1000*15

Impulse = 15 kN-s

b)

As far as the time goes, the rocket will continue to accelerate as long as a force is applied (even if the force is decreasing)

so maximum speed will be achieved at 30s.

c)

p = Ft = 15000

p = mv

v = p/m

v = 15000/425

v = 35.294 m/s

So the final speed of the rocket is 65 + 35.294 = 100.294 m/s
