(b) Calculate the magnitude of the force on the baby (in N) due to Jupiter if it is at its closest distance to Earth, some 6.29 x 10i m exert similar gravitational forces. (Of course, there could be an unknown force it.) acting, but scientists first need to be convinced that there is e ven an effect, much less that an unknown force causes Missing Plug-l How does the force of Jupiter on the baby compare to the force of the father on the baby? 6

Explanation / Answer

a) gravitational force is Fg = G*m1*m2/d^2

G is the universal gravitational constant = 6.67*10^-11 N-m^2/kg^2

m1 = 5 kg

m2 = 130 kg

d = 0.15 m

then Fg = G*m1*m2/d^2 = (6.67*10^-11*5*130)/0.15^2 = 1.93*10^-6 N

b) Fjupiter = G*m1*m2/d^2

m1 is the mass of the jupiter = 1.9*10^27 Kg

m2 = 5 kg

d = 6.29*10^11

Fjupiter = (6.67*10^-11*1.9*10^27*5)/(6.29*10^11)^2 = 1.6*10^-6 N

Ffather /Fjupiter = (1.93*10^-6)/(1.6*10^-6) = 1.21
