Question
True of False:
1. Andrea and Chuck are riding on a merry-go-round. Andrea rides on a horse at the outer rim of the circular platform, twice as far from the center of the circular platform as Chuck, who rides on an inner horse.
a.Andrea & chuck are moving at the same tangential (translational) speed. T or F
b. Andrea & Chuck are moving at the same angular (rotational) speed. T or F
2. An object moves in a circular path with constant speed v. Its velocity is constant but its centripetal acceleration is changing. T or F
Explanation / Answer
a. Tangential speed, v = r*w where r is distance from central axis of rotation and w is angular speed. Andrea will have more tangential speed than chuck because of her large distance from center.
b. Angular speed is rate of change of theta with respect to time. As both are moving in a circle , they are moving through same angle. Therefore angular speed will be same for both.
c. In a uniform circular motion, velocity is always changing because direction of motion is constantly changing in circular motion.
