Question
Blocks in an Elevator Ranking Task Part A Assume the elevator is at rest. Rank the magnitude of the forces. Three blocks are stacked on top of each other inside an elevator as shown in (Figure 1) Rank from largest to smallest. To rank items as equivalent, overlap them. Answer the tollawing questions with reterence to the eight torces defined folkows. No magnitude can be less than zero. Part B 2 kg This question will be shown after you complete previous question(s). ContinueExplanation / Answer
Force acting on the blocks:
Force acting on the 2 kg block by the 3 kg block,
F32 = m3*g = 3*9.8 = 29.4 N
Force acting on the 3 kg block by the 2 kg block,
F23 = 3*9.8 = 29.4 N
Force acting on the 3 kg block by the 1 kg block,
F31 = 0 (This is because there is no contact between block 1 and block 3.)
Force acting on the 1 kg block by the 3 kg block,
F13 = 0 ( because there is no contact between block 1 and block 3)
Force acting on the 1 kg block by the 2 kg block,
F12 = (m2 +m3)*g = (2+3)*9.8 = 49N
Force acting on the 2 kg block by the 1 kg block,
F21 = 5*9.8 = 49 N
Force acting on the floor by the 1 kg block,
F1, floor = (m1 +m2+m3)*g = (1+2+3)*9.8 = 58.8 N
Force acting on the 1 kg block by the floor,
Ffloor,1 = (m1 +m2+m3)*g = (1+2+3)*9.8 = 58.8 N
From the values for forces obtained from the calculation, it can be represented as,
Ffloor,1 = F1,floor > F21 = F12 > F23 = F32 > F31 = F13
