Question

11-7, (A) In the figure, four point masses are placed as shown,- two Assume that all the numbers in the figure are accurate to significant figures. 2m What are the x and y coordinates of the center of mass (or 2m center of gravity) of this arrangement? 4kg 3m 2m 2 kg 0 2m (B) Three masses are located in the x-y plane as follows: a mass of 6 kg is at (0 m, 0 m), a mass of 4 kg is at (3 m, 0 m), and a mass of 2 kg is at (0 m, 3 m). (b) Where is the center of mass (or center of gravity) of the system? C2-7 Page 6 of 7

Explanation / Answer

a) x coordinate of center of mass = [(4*3)+(8*0)+(2*2)+(6*5)]/(8+4+6+2)=2.3 m

  y coordinate of center of mass = [(4*5)+(8*3)+(2*0)+(6*2)]/(8+4+6+2)=2.8 m

b)x coordinate of centroid = [(6*0)+(4*3)+(2*0)]/(6+4+2)=1m

y coordinate of centroid =  [(6*0)+(4*0)+(2*3)]/(6+4+2)=0.5m
