Question
Write all the states of the cycles and all processes. Draw diagrams for each problem very clearly and pay attention. Many scientist say photosynthesis is not efficient compared to solar PV. Assume for a moment that nature would have followed a path where it would convert 50% of the available sunlight into glucose during photosynthesis. Given that photosynthesis can occur anywhere on the planet, describe what world we would be living in. Take into consideration some of these aspects CO_2 requirements Seasonal effects on CO_2 Size of trees Issues of sunlight for smaller plants and animal Water distribution/limitation How would the decay process occur? Could wood/roots take the stress of larger trees? Do you think the photosynthesis very low efficiency that nature has evolved is a good choice?Explanation / Answer
a) The CO2requirement will increase, though the rate of Calvin cycle will also increase.
b) seasonal effects on CO2 - this will be affected in the different geographical region.
c) The size of trees will also increase because the rate of synthesis of starch/carbohydrate will more.
d) Though the trees will grow faster, so the herbs will not get the amount of light due to shady.
e) The water distribution will also decrease, though the rate of photosynthesis will increase, the amount of water requirement also increase (due to more transpiration to maintain the temperature in leaves), which will result in decrease the ground level water.
f) Decay processes will decrease, though there are more amount of plant waste but the decomposers are same as initial.
g) The rate of osmosis and diffusion must increase to supply the amount of water required for photosynthesis. so roots must be more porous.
As a result, the total ecosystem will be imbalanced which is the fate for living organism in the biosphere. So the 10% transfer of energy in nature is a good choice.
