PRELAB Lab 7: Reflection and Refraction Leaming objectives: RR4: Apply reflection and refraction concepts to explain how light bject Prism inverts the image travels in prisms, fiber optics, and rainbows. 180 Reflection 1. Reflecting prisms are used in an optical devices (e.g. binoculars) to reflect light. Explain how the light is reflected when it is glass, and why the prism would be used instead of a mirror. (It may help to review p.796). [+3] Image Object Image 2. In your MasteringPhysics homework due today, the figure below is included in the last problem to explain how rainbows work. To explain how the sunlight disperses into red and purple when it hits the water droplet, do the following Dashed line leads to Sun, behind Sunlight a. Draw the normal vector at each point in the diagram tobs The observer sees red from Raindrops where refraction is represented. +1] Plug reasonable values into Snell's Law to demonstrate why the red light separates from violet light as it enters the water droplet. [+1] b. this drop 42 and violet from this drop. Plug reasonable values into Snell's Law to demonstrate why the red light separates even further from violet light as the light exits the water droplet (and returns to air). [+1] c. 3. Two glass prisms are arranged as shown. Complete the ray diagrams to show how the light rays would travel through the glass prisms. Include the normal line (dashed) and the rays both in the glass and on the other side (back in air). It does not need to be drawn exactly to scale. +4]Explanation / Answer
1. When light incident on glass mirror, a small amount of energy is absorbed by glass. Therefore reflected light will have reduced intensity.
However when light incident on prism, it may undergo total internal reflection. As energy is conserved in total internal reflection there is no loss of energy after reflection. Therefore prisms are used in optical devices instead mirror.
