Question

PROBLEMS: Do 5 of 6 1. A large fake coo spring wit has a kinetic energy of 20.0 kie sliding on a horizontal surface is attached to one end of a horizontal h spring constant k 400 n/m; the other end of the spring is fixed in place. The cookie J as it passes through the spring's equilibrium position. As the cookie slides, a frictional force of 10.0 N acts on it. a) How far will the coo b) What will be the kinetic energy of the kie slide before coming momentarily to rest? cookie as it slides back through the equilibrium position?

Explanation / Answer

(A) Applying work - energy theorem,

Work done by spring + work done by friction = change in KE

-(400)(d^2)/2 + (- 10 d) = 0 - 20

200 d^2 + 10d - 20 = 0

d = 0.292 m

(B) Work done by friction = - 2 (10 x 0.292)

= 5.84 J

Kf = 20 - 5.84 = 14.2 J
