If the jet pack is removable, explain how the astronaut can still use it to return to the ship. A block of mass m hangs from a string attached to a ceiling, as shown below. An identical string hangs down from the bottom of the block. Which string breaks if 2. a) b) EXPLAIN fully The lower string is pulled with a slowly increasing force. The lower string is jerked rapidly downward.

Explanation / Answer

2) a) The upper string is exposed to two forces one is the downward weight attached and the other is the force applied so in this case the upper string will break.

b) The lower string is jerked rapidly because of the inertia of the block.
