Question

CE Predict/Explain 24.48 Part A When the ac generator in the figure(Figure 1) operates at high frequency, is the rms current in the circuit greater than, less than, or the same as when the generator operates at low frequency? greater than less tharn the same as Submit My Answers Give Up Part B Choose the best explanation from among the following More current flows at high frequency because in that limit the capacitor is like a short circuit and current has two parallel paths to flow through Less current flows at high frequency because in that limit the capacitor is like an open circuit and current has only one path to flow through The capacitor has no resistance, and therefore the resistance of the circuit is the same at all frequencies. As a result the current is the same at all frequencies. Figure1of 1 Submit My Answers Give Up Continue

Explanation / Answer

A)

Equivalent impedance of the circuit :

Z = R || (R + 1/jWC) <------- W = angular frequency

So, Z = R * ( R + 1/jWC )/(R + R + 1/jWC)

So, Z = R * (jWRC + 1) / ( j2WRC + 1)

So, as frequency goes to infinity (sufficiently high) , Z tends to = R * (1/2) = R/2

as frequency is sufficiently low, Z tends to = R

So, we can see as frequency increases, Z decreases (Z = R at low frequency and Z = R/2 at high frequency)

So, current in the circuit increases as frequency increases.

So, answer is: greater than

B)

The first opion is correct as explained above
