Explanation / Answer

Given, M = 8 Kg

m1 = m2 = 4 Kg

Initial speed of M, u = 6 m/s

Let v1,v2 are the velocities of m1,m2 respectively.

According to law of conservation of momentum

                          Mu = m1v1 + m2v2

(8 x 6) = 4 x v1 + 4 x v2

v1 + v2 = 12

                             v2 = 12 - v1       ---------------------(1)

                (1/2)Mu2 + addtional energy = (1/2)m1 v12 + (1/2)m2 v22

144 + 17 = 2 v12 + 2 v22

              v12 + v22 = 161

              v12 + (12 - v1)2= 161

              v12+ 144 + v12 - 24v1 = 161

               2 v12 - 24 v1 - 17= 0

On solving, v1 = 12.67 m/s and v2 = -0.67 m/s
