Question 3: Now you'll study a circuit with two light bulbs in parallel. First, make predictions a) Rank the currents at points A-F from largest to smallest and explain your reasoning. b) What do you expect the voltage across each of the two light bulbs to be here, compared to the voltage across the bulb in a single-bulb circuit? Explain briefly. c) What do you expect will happen to the brightness of a single light bulb when a second bulb is added in parallel? How will the brightness of the second light bulb compare to the first? Explain d) What do you expect will happen to the current drawn from the battery when the second bulb is added in parallel? Explain e) For the measurements, it will be convenient to use a switch to change the circuit from one with a single bulb to one with two bulbs. Draw a switch at a suitable position into the diagram

Explanation / Answer

Assuming that the bulbs has the same resistance value or of the same wattage.

A)The current will begin flowing from point A so the point A will have max value of current , then it will divide into two brances since the bulbs are identical they will get the same current passing through them. again D and F will have the same current too and B will have current equal to that of A. So the order will be:

A = B > C = D = E = F

B)The voltage drop across each bulb will be same because its a fact that the voltage is same across the devices connected in parallel.

c)Both the bulbs are identical, and have got the same voltage across them so they will have the same brightness.

d)When the second bulb is added in parallel, the effective resistance of the circuit is lowered and hence the current will increase.
