Question

Let’s say you have a row boat. One at a time people get on (and you have an unlimited supply of people). What eventually happens to the boat? Explain why in detail.

Contrast the prior question with the situation of wood being loaded onto the boat. Assuming the density of the wood is less than water, what would happen in this case?

Suppose there is a boat floating on a deep pond and the person on the boat has a number of boulders on board the boat that he then dumps, one by one, into the pond. What will happen to the level of the POND as the rocks are being dumped overboard? Explain your reasoning.

Explanation / Answer

The boat will eventually submerge in water if the supply of people is infinite.

Reason:. The boat displaces the water from its submerged volume it the water. The weight of displaced water is equal to the total weight of boat. That why boat does not drown into the water. But if we load it with so many people then the toatal weight of boat will not be balanced with weight of water which is displaced by boad. Hence it will drown.

In case of wood, if we keep piling them up then there will be point when water will start entering the boat and boat will eventually drown. But, as the density of wood is less than water, the wood will keep floating on top of the water if that can be separated from the boat. And also if the wood is tied up with the boat, then it will save the boat also from drowning.

As the density of rocks is quite higher than that of water, so when the rocks were into the boat, the boat was displacing the water whose weight was equal to the rocks. Hence the volume of that water was quite large because of less density.

But if someone starts throwing them into the water, then the volume of water displaced by the rocks will be equal to them. Hence the rocks will drown and the water level will come down because the less volume is dislaced by the rocks now compared to which was getting displaced when rocks were in the boat.
