Activity 2: Analyzing Carbon Dioxide and Temperature Data Use the graph below to explore how human activities have influenced the natural balance of carbon dioxide and temperature of the planet. 370 6360T 350 340 330 0.60 0.45 0.30 300 emperature 10 Temperature CO2 360CO 0.15 0.00 -0.15 200 4 8320 -6 -8 -10 temperature 310 300 1970 Year 1990-0.30 1960 1980 100400-300 200 100 0 Thousands of years ago 2014 Pearson Education Figure 5 shows the carbon dioxide and temperature level from 400,000 years ago to the present. Figure 6 shows the carbon dioxide and Temperature levels between 1960 and 1990 Discussion: 1. Identify the two dependent variables on the graplh. 2. Explain why an increase and decrease in carbon dioxide level occurs every year 3. Use the figure above to complete the table. Calculate the change in the amount of carbon dioxide measured in the atmosphere for each decade listed in the table below by subtracting the latest year with the earliest year in the decade. Calculate the rate of carbon dioxide increase per year for each decade by dividing the change in amount of carbon dioxide for the decade by 10. Record your results in the table belovw Table 2 shows the change and rate of carbon dioxide Time Period (years) Change in amount of CO2 in each decadeRate of CO2/year (ppm/year) arts per million 1960-1969 1970-1979 1980-1989 4. Identify one pattern in the data and explain the cause for the pattern. a. Describe the pattern b. Hypothesize a possible cause of the pattern. Explanation / Answer

1) Two dependent variables are CO2 Concentration and Temperature variation.

2)CO2 level increases or decreases every year due to sessional changes. These changes may be brought by human activities or natural phenomenon.

3

4a) Ppm concentration is increasing very rapidly in recent years .

4b)Exponential rise in CO2 concentration can be attributed to industrial revolution. Factories , deforestation, pollution, fuel , man made objects are some of the reasons behind rapid increase in recent years.

Time period change in ppm rate(ppm/year) 1960-69 5 .5 1970-79 15 1.5 1980-89 20 2
