Question
From your everyday experience you should have a pretty good idea about what happens when materials of different temperatures are mixed. Let's explore this a bit. Q-1. Suppose you mixed together approximately 100 g of 24 °C water with 100 g of 12 °C water. (The masses will always be approximate.) What would you predict for the equilibrium temperature of this mixture? Q-2. Try to explain what might be happening that would explain this result. oC Q-3. Now suppose you mixed together approximately 200 g of 24°C water with 100 g of 12°C water. What would you predict for the equilibrium temperature of this mixture? Q-4. Try to explain what might be happening that would explain this result. oC Q-5. Suppose you mixed together approximately 100 g of 24°C water with 100 g of 12°C iron. What would you predict for the equilibrium temperature (approximately) of this mixture? Explain your answer.Explanation / Answer
1) 18 degree C
2) Hotter water will cool down and cooler will take the heat from hot water to attain equilibrium temperature of 18 degree C since quantity of hot and cold water are same, final temperature of water will be average of both.
3) now the final temp = 200*24+100*12/(200+100) = 20 degree C
4) Again because a higher volume of water is at higher temperature, it will attain an equilibrium temperature closer to higher value of the temperature as evident in the answer.
5) This cant be commented unless we know specific heat capacity of iron since iron and water are two different compounds
