Question
Compare and contrast the processes of glycolysis and the citric acid cycle. To do this effectively, you must list processes or traits that we talked about in class that are common to both processes and processes or traits that we talked about in class differ for these processes. You should think about the inputs and outputs to the processes, the purposes of the processes, where the processes take place, etc. Be sure to completely describe the similiarities and differences. For example, DON’T just say that “they occur in different places”, but state where each of the processes occurs. For ease of grading, please organize your answer so that similarities are under the heading “Similarities” and differences are under the heading “Differences”.
Explanation / Answer
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GLYCOLYSIS AND KREBS CYCLE
1. Glycolysis starts with glucose while krebs cycle starts with pyruvate
2. Glycolysis occurs in cytosol while krebs cycle occurs in mitochondrial matrix
3. Glycolysis breaks glucose down to pyruvate, 2 ATP and 2 NADH are produced, while end result of kreb's cycle is 6NADH, 2 FADH2, 2 ATP and 4CO2
4. Glycolysis is common to both aerobic and anaerobic mode of respiration, krebs cycle occurs only in aerobic respiration.
5. Glycolysis degrades a molecule of glucose into 2 molecules of pyruvate, Krebs cypress degrades pyruvate into carbon dioxide and water.
6. Glycolysis is a linear pathway while krebs cycle is cyclic.
7. In glycolysis substrate is glucose while in krebs cycle substrate is Acetyl Co A
SIMILARITIES
1. Both glycolysis and Krebs cycle is an oxidation process
2. Both cycle produces ATP from substrates
3. Every step in each process is catalyzed by a specific enzyme.
