Question

8. -112.5 points ZinPhysLS3 5.P.023. My Notes Ask Your Teacher A baseball approaching a batter with a speed of 27 m/s is hit and leaves the bat in the directly opposite direction with a speed of 53 m/s. The mass of the baseball is 0.15 kg (a) what is the magnitude of the impulse (in N·s) exerted by the bat on the baseball? N-s (b) If the time of contact between the bat and the baseball is 2.7 ms, what is the average force exerted by the bat on the baseball during this time interval? (Enter the magnitude in newtons.)

Explanation / Answer

(a) m = 0.15 kg.

Initial momentum Pi = 0.15*27 = 4.05 kg.m/s

Final momentum, Pf = 0.15*(-53) = - 7.95 kg.m/s

So, impulse = change in momentum = Pi - Pf = 4.05 - (-7.95) = 12 kg.m/s = 12 N.s

(b) Average force exerted by the bat on the ball = (Pi - Pf) / t = 12 / (2.7*10^-3) = 4444.4 N
