3. When considering the acoustics of a large performance space, two qualities are consid- ered very important: clarity and reverberation. Describe the difference between the two and explain how each one can be promoted. Are good clarity and good reverberation mutually exclusive goals? [3 Marks] 4. A politician is giving a speech outside in a park. At top strength, her voice produces a sound intensity level of 70 dB at a distance of 1 meter. a) Approximately, what is the sound intensity level of her voice for someone who is standing 30 meters away? (Recall the rule for changes in SPL & SIL: doubling distance reduces SPL and SIL by 6dB.) [1 Mark] b) A 4m wide by 3m high reflective wall is placed 2m behind her. Will reflections from the wall cause an annoying echo for someone who is standing 30m away from her, or wil her clarity be improved? Explain. (Hint Consider times of flight. Sketch a "floor plan" if it is helpful.) 2 Marks]

Explanation / Answer

In simple terms, the multiple reflection of soundwaves is called as reverberation. As sound waves reflect off the surface, the sound level and intensity will decay, so we tend to align ourseleves to best intensity direction.

Clarity is a term which is used to emphasize the understandability of a speech or music. In daily usage terms,  clarity enables sound to grab and hold our attention and makes it possible to hear every note. The more clear a sound is, the more attentive we tend to be.

Yes, Clarity and reverberation are mutually exclusive. From the above definition, we can easily observe that in a try to improve reverberation, the clarity will suffer and vice versa. Cinema halls or theaters are usually designed with focus on clarity than reverberation. The walls are desgined in such a way that the reflected sound waves are not undergoing sound decay. Also, Opera houses were loaded with velvet on the stage and in the hall. But they had very little reverberation
