Question

Question 9 13 A punter kicks the football. The football leaves the punter's foot with a vertical velocity of 20 m/s and a horizontal velocity of 15 m/s. (a) If the football is allowed to land on the ground, how long is it in the air (b) If the football is allowed to land on the ground, what horizontal distance will it travel? (c) If the football is caught when it is 1 m above the ground, how long will it be in the air? (d) If caught at 1 m above the ground, what horizontal distance will the football travel? (e) At what angle did the football travel immediately after being kicked? Based on the instructor resources from LWW, 2014

Explanation / Answer

(A) then vertical displacement = 0

y = v0y t + ay t^2 /2

0 = 20 t - 9.8 t^2 /2

t = 4.08 sec

(B) d = (v0x) t = 15 x 4.08 = 61.2 m

(C) 1 = 20t - 4.9 t^2

t = 4.03 sec

(d) d = 60.5 m

(e) theta = tan^-1(20/15) = 53 deg
