Question

Exercise 10.16 Part A A 12.0-kg box resting on a horizontal, frictionless surface is attached to a 5.00-kg weight by a thin, light wire that passes without slippage over a frictionless pulley (the figure (Fiqure 1)). The pulley has the shape of a uniform solid disk of mass 2.10 kg and diameter 0.600 m After the system is released, find the horizontal tension in the wire Submit My Answers Give Up Part B After the system is released, find the vertical tension in the wire ure of 1 12.0 kg Submit My Answers Give Up 5.00 kg Part C After the system is released, find the acceleration of the box.

Explanation / Answer

on 5 kg box:

Applying Fnet = m a

5g - Tv = 5 a .... (i)

on pulley; torque = I alpha

r (Tv - Th) = (2.10 r^2 / 2) (a/r)

Tv - Th = 1.05 a ..... (ii)

on 12 kg box:

Th = 12 a .... (iii)

Adding all three equations,

5g = (5 + 1.05 + 12) a

a = (5 x 9.81) / (18.05) = 2.72 m/s^2

(A) Th = 12 a = 32.6 N

(B) Tv = 5 ( g - a) = 35.4 N

(C) a = 2.72 m/s^2

(d) Fx = Th = 32.6 N

Fy = Tv = 35.4 N
