Question
1 Net Force Two people are pushing a car across a parking lot. The car has a mass of about 1,000 kg. First, they take turns pushing. When Person A pushes the car, the car accelerates at a rate of 20 cm/s2. When Person B pushes the car, it accelerates at a rate of 30 cm/s (a) Both people stand behind the car and push in the same direction. What is the net force on the car? How fast will the car accelerate? (c) Person A stands at the back of the car and Person B stands at the front, and they push in opposite directions What is the net force on the car? How fast will the car accelerate? In what direction?Explanation / Answer
(a) 20 cm/s^2 = 0.20 m/s^2
and, 30 cm/s^2 = 0.30 m/s^2
Force exerted by A, F1 = m*0.20 = 1000*0.20 = 200 N
Force exerted by B, F2 = m*0.30 = 1000*0.30 = 300 N
When the both persons push the car in the same direction,
Total force exerted = F1 + F2 = 200 + 300 = 500 N
Acceleration of the car = 500/1000 = 0.50 m/s^2
(c) Net force on the car = F1 - F2 = 200 - 300 = -100 N
Means the car will accelerate in the backward direction.
Acceleration of the car = 100/1000 = 0.10 m/s^2
