Question

Problem 3: Answer the following about the figure. 2 3 4 Part (a) What is the electric current (in A) in the 2 resistor in the electric circuit shown in the figure? Numeric : A numeric value is expected and not an expression. Part (b) What is the electric current (in A) in the 3 resistor in the electric circuit shown in the figure? Numeric A numeric value is expected and not an expression. Part (c) What is the electric current (in A) in the 4 resistor in the electric circuit shown in the figure? Numeric A numeric value is expected and not an expression.

Explanation / Answer

2 and 3 ohm resistances are in parallel. Effective resistance of these,

R = 2*3/2+3 = 6/5

Now in the loop net emf = 18 V clocwise
and net resistance = 4 + 6/5 = 5.2 ohm ( 4 and 6/5 are in series and Re = R1 + R2 for R1 and r2 in series)

Hence current in the loop = En / Rn = 18/5.2 = 3.46 A
That is current through 4 ohm resistance and effective resistance of 2 and 3 ohm.

Potential difference across effective resistance of 2 and 3 ohm = R*I = 6/5 * 3.46 = 4.15 V
this is potential difference across 2 as well as 3 ohm resistance.
current through 2 ohm resistance = 4.15 / 2 = 2.08 A
current through 3 ohm resistance = 4.15 / 3 = 1.38 A
