Question
Problem I. Tony crashes into Nancy while they are practicing their figure skating routines blem 1. Tony crashes into Nancy while they are practicing their figure skating routines. Tonya's mass is 70kg and Nancy's mass is 55kg. Just before the collision occurs, Tonya's sand Nancy's vel site direction. During the collision, Tonya exerts an average force of 977N against Nancy A. How big is the average force Nancy exerts against Tonya during the colision? B. If this is the only horizontal force acting on each skater during the collision, what average horizontal acceleration does each skater experience during the collision? C. If the collision is perfectly inelastic, how fast and in what direction will Tonya and Nancy be moving immediately after the collision?Explanation / Answer
A. From Newton's third law, average force Nancy exerts against Tonys is exactly the same as the average force Tonya exerts against Nancy. So, average force Nancy exerts against Tonya during hte collision = 977N
B.Average horizontal acceleration acting on Tonya = F/m = 977/70 = 13.957m/s^2
Average horizontal acceleration acting on Nancy = F/m = 977/55 = 17.76m/s^2
C.For inelastic collision, they stick to each other and move as single body, while the momentum remains conserved. So, initial momentum = final momentum , or, (taking Tonya's direction as +ve) 70*5.5-55*7=(70+55)*v
or, 385-385=125v
or, v=0m/s
