Question
Chapter 12, Problem 049 At a fabrication plant, a hot metal forging has a mass of 82.8 kg and a specific heat capacity of 457 J/(kg Co). To harden it, the forging is quenched by immersion in 791 kg of oil that has a temperature of 26.1 °C and a specific heat capacity of 2660 J/(kg Co) The final temperature of the oil and forging at thermal equilibrium is 56.7 °C. Assuming that heat flows only between the forging and the oil, determine the initial temperature in degrees Celsius of the forging. Number Units the tolerance is +/-396 Click if you would like to Show Work for this question: Open Show Work SHOW HINT LINK TOTEXT LINK TO TEXT By accessing this Question Assistance, you will learn while you earn points based on the Point Potential Policy set by your instructor.Explanation / Answer
using principle of caloriemetry
Heat lost by hot metal = heat gained by oil
(m_metal*C_metal*dT1) = (m_oil*C_oil*dT2)
(82.8*457*(T-56.7)) = (791*2660*(56.7-26.1))
(82.8*457*(T-56.7)) = 64384236
T-56.7 = 64384236/(82.8*457) = 1701.5
T = 1701.5+56.7
T = 1758.2 deg C
