please explain the reasoning behind the answer and any assumptions.
Eac 1) A force P pulls on a crate of mass m on a rough surface The figure shows the magnitudes and directions of the forces that act on the crate in this situation. W represents the weight of the crate Fx represents the normal force on the crate, and f represents the frictional force. Which statement best describes the motion of the crate? A The erate must be at rest B. The crate must be moving with constant velocity C: The crate must be moving with constant acceleration. D. The crate may be either at rest or moving with constant relocn. E The crate may be either at rest or moving with constant accelerationExplanation / Answer
Note : I have given the answer considering that acceleration = 0 is not equal to constant acceleration as in some cases it is assumed so.
Answer for this question is option D i.e The crate may be either at rest or moving with constant velocity.
The reason behind for crate being at either rest or moving with no acceleration or constant velocity is, the net force on it in horizontal direction is zero i.e net Force =0 in horizontal direction.
Calculation: Force applied is 160N at 60 degree angle from horizontal.
so the horizontal component of force in forward direction = 160 * cos 60o = 80 N (cos 60 = 0.5)
Horizontal component of Force in backward direction due to friction is 80N. (given in question)
Hence the net force on crate in horizontal direction is zero, so if its moving with some velocity it will keep moving with the same state or if it is at rest position then it will remain in same state.
